1. The Digital Upload Dimension Rules

Unlike printed photos that measure 35 × 45 mm, the UK Government digital upload portal requires a minimum resolution of 600 pixels wide by 750 pixels high.

  • The photo must be in focus and without red eye or lens distortion.
  • It must contain your head and shoulders, with clear space between the top of your hair and the top of the frame.
  • Photos under 50 KB are rejected for low fidelity; photos exceeding 10 MB fail server limits.

2. Background Color: Cream or Light Grey

A distinctive requirement for UK passport and visa photos is the background tone. While the US insists on stark white, the UK recommends plain cream or light grey to ensure clear separation between light clothing or hair and the backdrop.

  • Do not use patterned walls or backgrounds with visible objects.
  • Stand 0.5 meters away from the wall to prevent casting sharp shadows behind your silhouette.

3. Common Rejection Factors on the UK Portal

❌ Smiling or Open Mouth: Facial expressions must be neutral with mouth closed and eyes open and clearly visible.

❌ Hair Covering Eyes: Fringe or locks falling across the eyebrows or pupils will fail AI biometric checks.

❌ Glare on Spectacles: If you wear glasses, ensure there is no reflection or glare on the lenses. Tinted or sunglasses are not allowed.
